2002 version

Back in 2002, there were concerns from the owner of Duval Photography about using Flash on her website. These were the days of browser wars and bad browsers (in particular Netscape 4.x), pre-Windows XP, pre-OS-X, 14 inch monitors, and dialup. The main concern was accommodating the dialup user using 640x480 resolution on a 14-inch monitor. Because of the nature of Flash, browsers and operating systems became non-significant issues.

As for monitors, screen resolution and broadband, this was a transitional time and I compromised a bit providing a quick loading, although slightly larger than 640 pixel wide Flash navigation bar.

2006 version

Todays issues are somewhat different with 17 inch monitors the norm displaying 1024x768, or those with 14 inch monitors or laptops using 800x600 resolution, and a growing number of people using broadband connections. Today I'm concerned more with browsers that don't conform to standards when displaying HTML and CSS. Still though, we need to cover slower connections (dialup will never disappear) and 800x600 screen resolutions.

The new Duval navigation bar is just slightly wider than than the previous with mouseover images all contained within a single Flash file. I was initially asked to get rid of the mouseover images because it was thought to be distracting, but I liked them. So by hiding the images in the normal state and only showing those images on mouseover, it was given the 'thumbs-up' and they were kept.
