About wildflowerandbutterflies.com
Wildflowers and Butterflies features photographs of wildflowers, butterflies, and waterfalls taken over the years in parks, protected lands, fields, by rivers and streams, and along roadsides in Massachusetts and other New England states. Fannie Stebbins in Longmeadow and High Ledges in
Shelburne are 2 of my favorite places and both have their own sections in the site.
A little history
In the past, photography was a passion, but the cameras had been put away for many years. It was my best friends, Brian and Linda, that encouraged me to start taking pictures again. With Linda's love of wildflowers and Brian's list of beautiful places (perk of fly-fishing), we started going out regularly to different places, and it became the thrill of the hunt for a wildflower not yet found.
Wildflowers was my first website, created on AOL webspace in spring of 1999 to display the pictures I had taken over the past couple of years. I really enjoyed putting the website together and over time, it became less of a desire to find the flower and more of a desire to feed the website.
It was quickly discovered that AOL webspace wasn't the easiest to deal with. Back then, AOL gave you either 2 free MBs or 4MBs with AOL Hometown banners, and files had to be uploaded using AOL's interface (extremely slow and cumbersome). In Aug 1999, Wildflowers and Butterflies went live on brivers.com.
1999 was also the year I discovered Flash 4, and because I'm a project driven learner, the homepage was created based on my wrinkled-rose photo, and the Fritillary puzzle was created shortly after. The Wildflower quiz and the Bash Bish Falls puzzle were added a couple years later.
Wildflowers and Butterflies today
Last year, 2004, very few wildflowers and no butterflies were added to the site, but hopefully this year I'll get out more. I'd like to thank all those who have accompanied me on the many excursions into the wild: Brian and Linda, Rachel, Russ, Colleen, Jan, Sue and Ed.
